April
2009 - Oil & Gas Middle East |
|
Keeping the
offshore industry afloat takes an armada of unglamorous but vital
service craft flat out. Ensuring the flotilla is always on call are
the regions smaller yards, which have turned a quick - turnaround
into an art form.
A key player in the Middle East, and with a global pedigree is
Goltens. The firms has carved an important name for itself in the
regional offshore repair sector, recently winning contracts ranging
from FPSO power plant upgrades to turnkey main engine repairs and
hull work for CGG Vertsas.,
Fred Van der Bijl, director of technical Services, Goltens Dubai
Branch, told Oil & Gas Middle East that there still remained further
scope to step up tailored services for the offshore industry, and
this was his goal for 2009.
"Between 70 and 80% of our business in this region is coming from
the oil an gas supply and offshore support vessels. However, the
majority is related to vessels, since we are a ship repair company,
and docking offshore support / supply vessels is our day to day
businesses," says van der Bijl.
In addition to this work, the company has been expanding its
portfolio of offshore specific work. "This can vary between a
turn-key project and supply of spare parts. In terms of rig work
these are mainly special repair projects, although recently we
executed a turn-key project in Qatar where we supplied and installed
two start - up generators on two rigs in situ."
The double whammy of a credit crunch and suppressed oil price has
hit many business down the E&P supply chain hard, and van der Bijl
says repair and maintenance is no exception. "There has been a
noticeable shift for sure. Business from 2006 through most of 2008
was booming. If a company didn't make good business then did
something wrong!"
But things are noticeably different. The enquiries have remained
about the same, but getting the orders signed take more work now.
From the owners there is certainly more shopping around going on,
and people are hanging on for lower bids to come in," he
explains.
Goltens World Wide spans 22 branches, and this combined experience
has kept the team in Dubai well rooted despite the boom time. "The
most important factor is to pay constant attention and never lose
sight of the market. Adopting the right strategy is more than just
doing well when the market is. Therefore we are still investing in
our company assets and resources despite the slowdown."
Whilst Goltens are expecting less activity than has recently been
the norm, the Middle East has much to be optimistic about, and
investments are in the firm's infrastructure here, and in India are
ongoing. "We are about to finish our workshops in Jeddah (KSA) and
in Mumbai (India), and globally we are very excited about a huge
facility in Vietnam."
The EPIC (engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning)
contract for FPSOcean’s Deep Producer 1 vessel at Goltens’ yard and
Dubai Drydocks has been a notable success.
"Our engine, electrical and fabrication departments were working
around the clock to complete the entire design, pre - fabrication,
outfitting and commissioning of a complete containerized emergency
generator in a n impressive 67 days."
The project included the fabrication of two enclosures - one for the
emergency generator and the second for the emergency generator
control panels.
"In another offshore success we have been working on the largest
FPSO in the gulf for last three years, where we managed a complete
system conversion and modification, without interrupting the
operation of the FPSO."
Goltens has grown in stature with the regional repair and
refurbishment scene and has branches in Fujairah, Qatar and the
Jeddah yard will so go operational. In Bahrain the company have a
tenancy at the country's dry dock and fabrication facility ASRY.
"The Bahrain arrangement has been very successful, both for us and
the yard, and we are looking at replicating this elsewhere in the
region," he says. Generally, managing an offshore production plant
is not an easy task, especially when maintenance and repair of parts
are a daily business.. Mobilization of big items or parts of the
plant to a workshop is a costly task and very time consuming which
can lead to project delays. To solve this,
and build on recent success, Goltens will be ramping up the in-situ
service it offers this year. Flange facing as an in-situ machining
service, already covers up to to 4000 mm facing. Line boring of
fitting bolt holes, gear-boxes, engines or hinging of any kind are
other services which the firm can offer on board.
"We are acutely aware that our customers can only do business when
their ship is sailing so whenever a ship needs a repair then time is
one of the most important issues. It remains our priority to focus
on the repair and work together with our customer to get the job
done in the shortest time," he signs off.

Goltens
company Limited, a leading provider of specialized repair,
maintenance, reconditioning services and trading of engineering
components for the worldwide shipping, offshore marine
installations, industrial plants and power stations spread across 19
locations worldwide, has received the prestigious ISO 14001:2004 and
OHSAS 18001:2007 certification in addition to ISO 9001:2000 already
held since 1997 for it’s Dubai and Fujairah operations on 3rd
September 2008. The certificate presentation ceremony was held in
conjunction with a well attended Iftar party held at Dhow Palace
Hotel, Dubai.
Goltens is the only independent repair specialist to offer ship
owners, managers and OEMs all-inclusive worldwide service. Each year
over 1000 clients including ship-owners, shipyards, industrial
plants and power stations, rely on Goltens to organize, plan and
perform critical maintenance and repair work.
The Integrated Quality, Health, Safety & Environmental (QHSE)
Management systems were analyzed and audited by a panel of Lead
auditors from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), prior to the award of the
certification-on Environmental Management System (ISO 14001: 2004),
Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS 18001:2007)
& recertification on Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2000). the
DNV team put both operations through all the evaluation procedures
and eligibility criteria.
Mr. Gunnar Haug, Managing Director of Dubai & Fujairah operations,
said: “Goltens Co. Ltd. opted for the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
endorsement, as the standards are widely acknowledged for
environmental, health and safety management systems. The
certifications stipulate how organisations need to implement
effective mechanisms for the welfare of the employees as well as the
communities in which they operate. They also indicate our commitment
to good environmental practices and proactively implementing
strategies, while providing a safe setting for our employees and
sub-contractors.”
Mr. Paul Friedberg, President of Goltens Worldwide Service, said:
“Goltens World Wide, with some 1200 employees and service stations
in 19 different locations, is in a substantial globalization process
these days, and Goltens in UAE is by far the biggest unit and works
as a locomotive in this process. “Going global” is a difficult and
complex process, but at least much easier to accomplish when the
whole worldwide service network is using the same uniform integrated
management system. Most of our customers operate internationally;
therefore it is easier for them to refer to a service provider with
service stations all singing from the same song sheet. The process
however does not stop here. Furthermore, continual improvement of
QHSE system performance as required by the certified management
systems will be harnessed and translated to organizational
excellence and business sustainability.”

Goltens acquires Nyland Maritime |
 |
Oslo, Norway November 22
2005: Goltens is pleased to announce that the company has concluded an asset
purchase agreement with NLI Nyland AS to take ownership of their marine
division “Nyland Maritime”, a leading provider of spare parts for two-stroke
diesel engines
|
|
Under the terms of the agreement, Goltens will acquire a large stock
of spare parts and employees, who will continue to work at the
company’s offices in Arendal, in Southern Norway. While the NLI
Nyland production facilities are not part of the acquisition, NLI
Nyland will continue provide services under a separate production
agreement with Goltens.
For more than 80 years, Nyland, once of Norway's
leading manufacturer of low-speed diesel engines, has provided high
quality spare parts for the most popular range of low speed marine
diesels, providing approximately 27,000 cylinder liners for various
shipping companies over the years. The company, which used to be
owned by Aker Kvaerner, was sold to NLI Nyland in 2004, before being
acquired by Goltens. Nyland Maritime generated more than USD six
million in revenue in 2004.
According to Preben Liltved, Goltens regional
vice president (Europe) the acquisition of Nyland Maritime will help
Goltens meet their increased need for engine spare parts. “As a
global provider of ship service and repair, reliable access to
quality spare parts is a vital part of our business,” he says.
“Nyland Maritime will help us manage this issue more effectively.”
Liltved notes that Nyland Maritime offers a broad
range of engine parts, which includes cylinder liners, cylinder
covers, piston crowns and piston skirts for low-speed marine
diesels. “Soon, we will have available a complete list of engine
spare parts which our network of global services centres will
promote in the marine market.” he says.
According to Nyland Maritime’s general manager,
Tom Erik Johnsen, the two companies have a long history together.
“The relationship between Goltens and Nyland Maritime has been built
up over the last 25 years,” he says. “And we welcome the opportunity
now to work more closely with them under the Goltens umbrella of
companies.” Johnsen says that the deal will improve the
distribution of Nyland Maritime’s spare parts, while Goltens will be
able to provide their customers instant access to quality parts in
Singapore, Rotterdam and, Dubai, as well as other Goltens worldwide
locations.
Liltved notes that Nyland Maritime has complete
control over the production process from start to finish, ensuring
quality of all parts. The company’s facilities are also equipped to
design parts according to individual specifications, quality and
design, and all parts meet with relevant class specifications.
Nyland Maritime also demands the same level of care from their
suppliers, who are required to supply raw materials to meet or
exceed the company’s high standards.
“We are confident that adding Nyland Maritime to
the Goltens worldwide organisation will not only help us serve our
customers more efficiently, but help us gain market share by having
access to our own source of quality parts,” says Liltved.

Demand
soars for Goltens innovative crankshaft repair tool
|
 |
|
Oslo, Norway, November 24, 2004: Goltens today announced that the company
has performed 13 crankshaft repairs in a 12 month period using their
innovative crankshaft repair tool.
|
Goltens: Rotterdam, 04.02.04-
Goltens confirms that it’s three-year crankshaft R&D project has
significantly shrinked repair time frames for two stroke engines, resulting
in substantial time and cost savings for owners and operators.
Goltens recently flew two teams of engineers from Rotterdam and Singapore
and 1300kg of special tools to Korea, undertaking major engine repair work
(a damaged crankpin) on a 150.000dwt tanker newbuild - not yet delivered to
owners.
Goltens shaved 5 mm off the original 760 mm diameter crankpin and machined
new crankpin fillets to avoid misalignment. The yard made a dummy bearing
for the blue fitting of the pin.
“No manual filing or polishing was needed to achieve the blue contact of 90
per cent - an accomplishment deemed highly unlikely just a few months ago.
The end result was a new crankpin diameter of 755 mm at a tolerance ratio
within 2/100 of a millimetre, said Roel Van Etten, Managing Director,
Goltens, Rotterdam.
Machining was performed with a frequency controlled electrical drive and
single point cutting unit. Crankcase cleaning was accomplished in a very
short time and upon completion the vessel left the yard – only seven days
after Goltens arrived.
“Significant repair work of this volume within such a short period has never
been accomplished before. We manned two shifts every day. Both the shipyard,
owner and the engine maker superintendent were very satisfied with the quick
turnaround and the quality of work,” said Van Etten.
He said, “Repair work of this nature could not have been accomplished
without Goltens experience and the technological advancement of its new
range of two-stroke crankshaft repair tools.
There is increasing market demand for repair solutions to handle new
crankshaft designs according to OEM tolerance requirements. All the critical
elements necessary to ensure customer rapid, successful, insitu repairs,
including site preparation, services, testing, and installation, are now in
place.
Goltens confirms that a newly trained team of engineers has performed two
similar repair projects, both achieving highly satisfactory results.
Goltens’ new crankshaft repair tools represent great strides in the rapid
repair of state of the art crankshafts, thus improving bottom line losses
associated with down time. Goltens’ commitment to industry standards enables
manufacturers and shipowners to trust them as a key supplier of worldwide
ship engine repairs.
Goltens, founded in 1940, has built a trusted reputation by providing top
ship repair products and global repair support to shipowners. The company
continues to develop, manufacture and offer new products to better serve
clients worldwide.
A global network of 14 modern workshops, Goltens undertakes difficult and
specialised insitu machining worldwide.

Goltens performs engine repairs in record-breaking time |
According to Preben
Liltved, Vice President Goltens Europe, the new crankshaft repair
tool has exceeded performance expectations. “With regard to speed
and quality, the new tool has proven to be vastly superior to
earlier methods of crankshaft repair,” he says. “This has allowed us
to provide our customers with faster service and a significant
improvement in quality.”
Using this tool, Goltens has been able to carry out more than a job
a month without any interruption in the company’s traditional
crankshaft repair work on smaller engines.
Liltved says that since October 1, 2004, Goltens has completed
crankshaft machining on a broad range of engine types, including
Sulzer RTA 52 and 62, MAN B&W 50, 60 and 70 MC and Grande Motori and
Mitsubishi engines. The tool has even been used for cutting the
bearing surface on a propeller shaft.
For customers, the new crankshaft repair tool offers several
benefits. “The big advantage is that we can now cut both the radius
and the pin itself,” Liltved explains. “The pin is machined in one
cut from one radius to the other, without wasting time re-aligning
the tools in between each cut. As a result, there is no need for
manual filing and polishing after the cutting. This process
significantly reduces the time it takes to complete the job while
producing better results.”
Liltved says that Goltens will continue to refine the tool and
currently has plans to develop a similar tool for smaller engines,
based on the same technology. “If we are successful, this new tool
will benefit shipowners and operators by providing improved results
in less time,” he says.
Liltved says that tools for diameters below 400 mm will be developed
and distributed to strategic Goltens locations around the world.
However, Goltens will continue to offer traditional grinding
methods, which are often the best solution for minor repairs.
Liltved notes that when more than 2 mm on the pin must be removed,
cutting will be much faster than traditional grinding methods.
“Goltens has built a reputation for rapid, quality service,” Liltved
says. “Our innovative crankshaft repair tool will help strengthen
that reputation.”

Says Liltved: “Installing and servicing Jensen lubricators perfectly
matches Goltens’ business activity in the retrofit and diesel engine
repair and maintenance service markets.”
“Goltens’ staff of trained technicians, engineers and mechanics are
accustomed to the major makes of main and auxiliary diesel engines
and are the optimal service partner”, says Thomas Jensen, vice
president sales, Jensen Lubricators. He confirms that Goltens’ staff
would undergo special training to undertake retrofit, service, and

service, worldwide network and skilled mechanical staff ensured
proper performance of this type of work.”
Says Jensen: “We are convinced that clients are best served with
specialists to undertake many jobs. Ships must depart on time with
the job successfully completed. This agreement is made to ensure
better service to our international customers.”
SIP lubrication can be installed as retrofit on all major engines,
i.e. MAN B&W, Sulzer and MHI designed 2-stroke engines and,
according to Goltens, there is huge growth potential for SIP in the
retrofit market.
“SIP lubrication grants operating economy and is a must in the
retrofit segment. Our focus will be to support shipowners with
retrofit SIP systems on a worldwide basis,” says Liltved.
Says Liltved: “We are ready to undertake full retrofit
responsibility and send our engineers to every corner of the world.
We will also take part in sea trials when required to confirm that
an installation and setting has been properly done.”
About the SIP system
Cylinder wear and cylinder lubrication oil consumption are essential
parameters for the operating economy of large 2-stroke diesel
engines. Products able to minimize cylinder wear and/or the
consumption of cylinder oil are increasingly in demand. The SIP
lubrication concept meets both of these demands. Tests have shown a
potential of up to 50% cylinder oil savings without trade-off liner
wear.
